My name is Doraine Bennett and I opened Yoga Inspired in June of 2014. I am not naturally flexible and I did not come to yoga because I found these bendy ways easy. I have a history of low back pain. When my back would “go out,” I often spent days lying on the floor, on a heating pad, applying analgesic cream, and popping anti-inflammatory pills. A very good physical therapist kept me out of surgery and got me into an exercise program to strengthen my low back.
One day nearly fifteen years ago, I tied on my tennis shoes, threw my gym bag into the back of our white Toyota van, and drove myself into town for an exercise class. My favorite teacher was a free-spirited, large-boned, loud, young woman who seemed not to care a bit that there were holes in her gym shorts. One particular day she decided to experiment on us with her new, self-taught knowledge of yoga. I could tell these stretches with the strange names were accomplishing something in my body that nothing else had done. I was totally hooked.
That was the beginning of my yoga journey. Since then, I’ve studied in several studios, enjoying the different styles, creating muscle memories that lasted longer than some of my mental ones, especially the last place I laid my keys or my phone.
