How do we learn to hear God speak to us? The best way is to use scripture, his word, to learn to recognize his voice.
Take this verse, 1 Kings 8:22-23. It’s Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple.
O God, God of Israel, there is no God like you in the skies above or on the earth below who unswervingly keeps covenant with his servants and relentlessly loves them as they sincerely live in obedience to your way. You kept your word to David my father, your personal word. You did exactly what you promised—every detail. The proof is before us today!
1. Choose a phrase that speaks to you.
“unswervingly keeps covenant with his servants”
Take it in. Understand as much as you can of what it means.
2. Respond as though you were having a conversation with God about this phrase. Be honest with whatever rises, positive or negative.
“Lord, I need to know you remember your promise to me, that you’ll be faithful."
3. Be still, remind yourself that God’s presence is with you. Then change the pronouns and hear the Lord speak these same words to you.
“ (Your Name), my commitment to you is unswerving, unmoving, unchanging. I will not forget.”
4. Write it down in your journal and put a star in the margin. You’ll be able to come back anytime and remind yourself what the Lord said to you.
Don’t be surprised when you hear the enemy tell you that you’re just making that up.
